Experience a conference unlike any other: entirely focused on the small ensemble field. Join more than 600 chamber music professionals and artistic innovators for three days of interactive sessions, peer-to-peer networking, inspiring performances, and industry-specific commerce.

As a dynamic cultural hub, Chicago and The Drake hotel serve as a vibrant backdrop for Chamber Music America's National Conference—and one that is readily explorable in August. The city's rich history and expansive artistic range will permeate each Conference activity, and we hope you will take full advantage of its offerings.

This is your invitation to learn, connect, celebrate, and ask the big questions necessary to propel our field. Elevate your skills, rekindle your artistic joy, or simply experience the annual event for chamber music. You won't want to miss it.

Agenda

To help you navigate the agenda, Conference sessions are categorized into several tracks, some which offer distinct opportunities for learning, while others are designed for deeper conversation. Follow our guides or choose to improvise—each activity offers something for everyone.

Thursday morning, presenters are invited to a pre-conference convening hosted by Chicago Chamber Music Society. Down the street, jazz professionals can take part in CMA's Jazz Summit, a constructive gathering held at the Jazz Institute of Chicago. On Thursday and Friday, check out a brand-new interactive experience: the Carriage House Violins Instrument Showcase, featuring rare creations old and new. Don't forget to visit the exhibit hall (especially during happy hour!) and enjoy the Awards Luncheon, all included in a Conference pass.

Saturday features a full-day Chamber Music Festival at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. While a seat at the CMA Gala dinner requires a separate ticket, everyone is invited to Saturday's concluding performance when we'll honor the legendary Tacaks Quartet, visionary Imani Winds, and the rising stars of Poiesis.

Please note that the schedule below is subject to change, and additional sessions may be added. Breakfast roundtable discussions will be announced ahead of the conference.

This session explores how thoughtfully designed programs and curricula can meet the needs of young musicians, reflect the communities they serve, and prepare students for higher education. Focusing on chamber music, panelists will discuss strategies to balance individual and ensemble instruction, foster technical skill and collaboration, and create curricula that offer students broader pathways—as lifelong artists, educators, or advocates for music. Attendees will gain practical insights for designing pre-college programs that develop well-rounded, college-ready students and foster meaningful engagement with their communities.

This session reveals how a project illuminating the intertwined histories of Black, Native, and European traditions was curated—by shaping a cohesive narrative, selecting repertoire, and engaging artists whose lived experiences bring authenticity and depth. We will share how collaboration transformed the program into something far richer than a conventional classical concert, and we will address why this work matters. Leave with practical strategies for developing an idea from spark to stage and designing projects that are both artistically compelling and socially meaningful.

A longstanding and ever-evolving tradition in jazz, mentorship continues to transform how artists create successful and sustainable careers to then become the next generation of mentors and innovators. For women- and gender minority-led ensembles especially, as well as other groups who lack access to resources, mentorship opportunities are crucial for career development as they break systemic and geographic barriers. Hear from artists and their mentors about the experiences of learning together. Learn how this work can meaningfully and effectively break silos, spark innovation, and create new paths for the future of jazz music.

Since 2023, Camerata Nova has commissioned seven new works for a contemporary woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon. Central to the ensemble's mission is a guiding question: How do we generate repertoire for a novel instrumentation? The discussion will address questions of ensemble identity, repertoire sustainability, and the evolving role of performer-driven commissioning in contemporary chamber practice. By framing the composer–ensemble partnership as central to creating lasting repertoire, the session highlights practical strategies for ensembles and composers seeking to expand the repertoire and establish new instrumental standards.
